Workers from various ports across Brazil, including Santos, will be on a 12-hour strike on October 22, 2024. The strike is a protest against a bill that, among other changes, threatens to eliminate labor rights for port categories and weaken the unions that represent them.

This strike is a direct response to Bill 3.129/2020, which proposes a review of the Port Law. According to workers, the proposal represents a significant threat to the category, as it allows for the indiscriminate outsourcing of casual labor and can eliminate the so-called public dock, creating uncertainties about job maintenance in the sector.
The movement also questions the decrease in union representation, as the new law weakens the role of unions in labor negotiations, jeopardizing historically acquired rights. There is a fear that the approval of the measure will lead to a deterioration of working conditions in ports, which are strategic for the Brazilian economy, in addition to increasing unemployment in the category.

The port mobilization is just one of the many demonstrations that have emerged against the proposed reform. Several sectors point out that, if approved, the new legislation may not only negatively impact the lives of port workers but also compromise the operation of ports, which are essential for foreign trade.
In light of this scenario, the October 22 strike stands out as a warning to society and authorities about the consequences of this bill, reinforcing the need for dialogue and review of the proposals before their final approval in the National Congress.
